For those of you who fell under the spell of DVD in 2001, there's plenty of exciting new discs to look out for in 2002. Here, in alphabetical order, are the respective film company stalls for your perusal. Please note that dates are tentative...
ANCHOR BAY New to the UK, but already making an altogether impressive impression with titles such as the superb "Halloween" and "The Evil Dead". It's promising feature-packed, remastered classics like Bob Hoskins in "Mona Lisa" for February and "The Long Good Friday" for April. Plus expect to see "Time Bandits" for September. And, at some point in 2002, a release for one of the finest action thrillers ever crafted, "Runaway Train".
BUENA VISTA has a busy 2002 coming up, with plenty of back catalogue releases, including "Crimson Tide", "Die Hard with a Vengeance", and "Pulp Fiction" some of the cream of the crop. These titles are currently available on feature-free DVDs, but the likelihood is that they will get enhanced releases. Amongst the big new titles, expect to see "Dracula 2001" and "Blow Dry" in February, "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" in March, and, at some point next year, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", "Scary Movie 2", "High Heels and Low Lifes", and "Apocalypse Now Redux".
COLUMBIA TRISTAR Out in January is the virtual blockbuster "Final Fantasy"; while in February we can swoon to Heath Ledger in "A Knight's Tale". May sees the release of "America's Sweethearts", followed by Ridley Scott's "Black Hawk Down" in July. Expect to see "Glitter" at some point in the year, and possible end of 2002/early 2003 releases for "MiB2", "Stuart Little 2", and "Spider-Man".
20th CENTURY FOX plans some very special editions for all-time action classics like "Die Hard" and the first sequel, and "The French Connection" I and II in February. Also getting the 'special' treatment in April are "Cleopatra" and "M*A*S*H". New blockbusters include "Planet of the Apes" in February, and "Moulin Rouge" in March.
HONG KONG LEGENDS Jackie Chan fans will be delighted to know that HKL plans DVD releases of "Police Story 2" in March, and "Project A" in May. If you were wowed by its "Game of Death" Platinum Edition release, then you'll no doubt be excited to hear that both "Red Wolf" and the controversial "Naked Killer" will get the 'Platinum' treatment in February and April respectively.
MIA will release the new Dario Argento film "Sleepless" in February. Hailed by many as a return to form (about time too!), a double disc release is planned. MIA's new label, Tokyo Bullet, plans releases for "Sonatine" and "Boiling Point", "Gonin II", the "Black Angel" films next year, plus other critically acclaimed Japanese cult movies. This new label will only release on DVD, with VHS relegated to the bin.
PARAMOUNT releases are shrouded in a PR mist, but we can tell you that for the first quarter of 2002 it's planning the 1993 flick "Alive" and the somewhat older "Crocodile Dundee". Not movie-related but worth mentioning, Frasier series one will also debut on disc.
UNIVERSAL/DREAMWORKS A heady mix of cult and major blockbusters figures in Universal's plans for the first quarter of 2002. Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts play it cool in "The Mexican" in February, while everyone loses their cool in "Jurassic Park III" and "The Relic", out the same month. The beginning of March sees the release of the long-awaited "An American Werewolf in London" to special edition DVD, plus later in the month is new action star Vin Diesel in "The Fast and the Furious".
WARNER BROS For those all-important new blockbuster releases, Warner plans to put out "Swordfish" for the end of January and "A.I." and "Angel Eyes" in March. Special editions are planned for older favourites like "The Wicker Man", "Empire of the Sun", and "The Fugitive" in February, and "The Deer Hunter" in March. Also out that same month is the long-awaited DVD release for "The Goonies".
