Barry Levinson seems to make films at the rate of one a year, and I kind of wish for all our sakes he'd slow down a little, because although he's undoubtedly a talented film maker, he's getting further and further away from what made his first film, "Diner", such a treat.
Here, the miscast Bruce Willis once again shows off his trademark smirk, but it feels woefully out of place - it's rather like watching his "Die Hard" character John McClane in an indie movie. Billy Bob Thornton is fantastic as the neurotic hypochondriac, and Cate Blanchett is enjoyable in what is really an underwritten role, but the whole thing feels rather flat and uninspired.
Willis' wig, on the other hand, deserves a special mention, because although it's not a terribly convincing hairpiece, you can't see the joins, which is more than can be said for the plot.
There's also a 'surprise' ending which, if you don't see it coming, frankly you shouldn't be allowed to vote.
A rather silly film which never really gets above first gear.
