Ginger Snaps DVD (2000)

Unlike their beer, there's plenty of bite to the Canadian werewolf movie "Ginger Snaps", that now tantalises on DVD.

The creepily gloomy cinematographic style of the movie - directed by John Fawcett - transfers well to DVD, without any grain lurking in the shadowy scenes. Filled with detail and pleasingly sharp, there's little to fault the picture quality on offer here.

Plenty of bass for the subwoofer helps underpin the enjoyable shock moments in the movie. Just watch out for the night-time playground scene as a werewolf savages your rear speakers, only to then streak to the front centre speaker in a delicious example of the superior steering effects that add to the unsettling mood of the movie.

Katharine Isabelle told us that she wasn't too sure if she was looking forward to seeing her screen tests on this DVD. She needn't have worried, for it's clear when watching them why she got the part, and it's the same for Emily Perkins' equally good test.

The other extra features aren't as good, but aren't long enough to annoy, either. The five minute 'making of' featurette contains interviews with the cast and crew that concentrate on the characters and the plot. There's also a very short special effects featurette, and vaguely interesting production notes too.
