The Exorcist - Director's Cut DVD (2000)

What's scarier? "The Exorcist" or the money it pumps out of people's pockets? Billed as 'The Version You've Never Seen' (well it wasn't our fault), "The Exorcist - Director's Cut" has 11 more minutes of fun and a super-scary new sound mix to freak yourself out with courtesy of the DVD release.

For a film that was made back in 1973, it polishes up rather well on disc. The scenes in Iraq look like they were shot recently, and most of the rest is pretty impressive too. Some of the Georgetown exteriors look a little grainy but they'll hardly make you vomit with rage.

So no puking, but do expect to rotate your head to the gorgeously atmospheric 5.1 EX sound mix. A lot of attention has been paid to the rear speakers, with a welter of creepy noises designed to send you into a ceiling spider-walk.

Where this DVD falls down is in the extras department. The last DVD release offered plenty of special features, and it may just be worth waiting to see if Warner Bros release a double-disc set. What you get for this new release is an audio commentary with William Friedkin. It's a busy affair that's also quite useful if you want all the extra footage not only pointed out but explained too.

There's also a handful of new TV and radio teasers, but the main selling point of this DVD is the all-new, and all impressive sound mix.
