Halloween H2O DVD (1998)

While hardly a brilliant new horror film, at least "Halloween H20" manages to be considerably better than most sequels put together. With an emphasis on terror rather than gore, and the return of Jamie Lee Curtis, there are some classy shock moments on offer that are further enhanced by the DVD release.

In order to maximise the scares you don't really want to be missing any detail. An excellent transfer to DVD by Buena Vista ensures that no matter how gloomy the location Myers is creeping about in, the picture remains clear and filled with definite shadows, rather than murky grain.

There's no point hiding behind the sofa if you have rear speakers, as the 5.1 sound mix keeps them busy with ominous thunder rumbles, ethereal wailing, screeching, and more!

There's an unexpectedly good 17-minute documentary included on the DVD. While you might just expect the usual cheesy featurette, this effort is crammed with interviews including John Carpenter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh, and Wes Craven. Jamie Lee Curtis discusses her role as one of the driving forces in getting this new film made, and it's refreshing to find a big star so proud of an early feature from their career.

Once you're done with that, there's a quiz to contend with (which has so far caught out even so-called "Halloween" experts), a dreadful music video, and a trailer.
