Fancy a night of indulgence? You could do worse than treat yourself to the soft but enjoyable "Chocolat". Just be warned that if you're getting the DVD, you'll probably have to make a mad dash to your nearest chocolate source as a result of the wicked combination of film and assorted special features on this disc.
A quick Family Fortunes survey of words you'd most likely associate with chocolate could well come up with 'sensual' (even if the family never gets it). The picture quality certainly falls into the sensual category, with the icy blue exteriors contrasting with the warm interior glows that transfer beautifully to this DVD.
Meanwhile, the music score daintily dances around the speakers in a 5.1 sound mix that's designed to enrobe you into the mood of the film.
Topping the list of the special features is an audio commentary with director Lasse Hallström and producers David Brown, Kit Golden, and Leslie Holleran. Legendary producer David Brown (of such films as "Jaws", "Cocoon", and "The Player") tends to dominate the proceedings, but that's no bad thing as he prompts the other participants into discussing their contributions to the film.
There's also a short dissection of Brown's career in the 'making of' documentary on the disc. This is joined with a host of cast and crew interviews, including Dame Judi Dench and Johnny Depp, and a brief look at the history of chocolate (by this time, you'll be out on the street hunting for any shops that are selling the stuff).
For those of you interested in movie design, there are two short but good featurettes on the costumes and production design of the movie. To round things off, seven deleted scenes have been included on what is a sumptuous DVD package.
