The Score

Interviewed by Anwar Brett

You have brought an incredible cast together for "The Score".

It's heaven having actors like Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Edward Norton, and Angela Bassett. They're each extraordinary artists but I had no idea if they could all work together. My biggest sweat was "will it work when they get together, will they feed off each other, improvise with each other?". It was a big relief to me that they all worked together so well.

Is there any truth in the stories that you and Marlon didn't exactly hit it off?

Marlon's a very gracious guy, I think he's worked with a lot of gods. I'm not a god. I like to think that I am open and generous, I think I'm a decent human being, but that doesn't mean that if I think I'm right I won't stand up for myself.

So what happened between the two of you?

I made the mistake of thinking that I'd better be strong with these guys, or they'd eat me alive. I didn't do that with Edward and Bob, but I became too strong with Marlon because he was trying to push me. I should have been nice and easy, but I was combative. I lost my temper, not in anger, but because I was upset, due to a couple of things he said to me and I said to him. I was wrong. And it's never black or white, it came from caring. If he didn't care about the work then he wouldn't have been upset either. And on screen he is amazing, isn't he?

"The Score" is released around the UK on Friday 28th September.
