Reminiscent in style to John Water's polished "Cry Baby", Jamie Babbit's "But I'm a Cheerleader" is a sly and witty delight. The fun is slightly enhanced by a reasonable release onto DVD.
The theme of sexual reorientation is represented with vivid pinks and blues that offer a potential minefield for lousy image quality. There's the odd smeared hue on this DVD transfer but otherwise it keeps the image sharp and vibrant without letting the colours run riot and spoiling the look of the film.
Lots of outrageously cheery tunes pepper the 2.0 surround mix that's bright and clear, if somewhat limited in effects.
Unlike the feature-free US disc, this UK release has 'behind the scenes' footage mixed in with a Jamie Babbit interview. It's a little amateurish in quality but interesting to watch and Babbit reveals how she was able to attract such a high profile cast on such a limited budget.
