Sigourney Weaver

"Heartbreakers"

Interviewed by Richard McCaffery

Is "Heartbreakers" like "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", but with a mother and daughter team?

That was one of the reasons I was attracted to it. I was a huge fan of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and it’s quite unusual in a big Hollywood picture for the two attractive, smart, and devious women to have the leads - that was another great lures.

Was it fun to be glamorous again?

I think I’ve spent a fair amount of time in mud and slime for "Alien" movies, so I loved playing someone who is beautiful - a femme fatal wearing fabulous costumes. The image for my character Max was Sophia Loren. She is beautiful and ageless. How could anyone say no to Sophia Loren? Before, I’ve left the accents to Meryl Streep but suddenly I was doing this Russian accent and wearing lots of furs and velvets. It was fun and liberating.

Did you actually sing in the Karaoke scene?

Yes, that was me! I enjoy doing cabaret but haven’t done it in quite a while, so I just loved that part of it.

Was Gene Hackman disgusting to act opposite?

He was so repulsive. My big worry when he was cast was "how I’m I going to be repulsed by him because he is so nice" but he was great. He would come in with these black teeth and yellow tobacco stains, looking just vile. There seemed to be smoke coming from every pore.

Did Ray Liotta's comic turn surprise you?

There are things Ray did that might have been in the script, but I don’t remember them there. Like on our wedding night when I’m wearing the body stocking and he pulls out the switchblade to undress me. There’s always an air of danger with him and it's fun to see it used for comic purposes.

Are you going to do more comedies?

Well hopefully I’m going to do something different. I said to my husband "I better do a serious drama soon or they’ll find out how shallow I really am!".
