Ooo mama! The DVD for "What Lies Beneath" will scare you witless! Road-tested on horror hardened friends, this disc had them clawing at the sofa with fear.
As you'd expect with a brand spanking new blockbuster like this, the picture quality is never less than excellent. The use of shadows is important in turning the beautiful locations into scary places, which this transfer showcases with subtle detail.
Ok, the film itself is good as supernatural thrillers go, but it's the 5.1 sound mix that really adds a whole new level of terror not before accessible to makers of older, comparable movies. The enhanced Foley effects will soon have you grinding your teeth with anticipation, and when those shock moments come (because they will and you can't stop 'em!), they do so with considerable force.
Director Robert Zemeckis and his producers provide an audio commentary that works on both technical and script levels. It's a good-humoured affair, but clearly a lot of time and effort went into creating a film that they hoped would really scare people.
The title "Constructing the Perfect Thriller" is perhaps slightly misleading for the 'making of' featurette included on the DVD. A lot of it actually concentrates on the career of Zemeckis, including new interviews with Michael Douglas, Michael J Fox and stars of "What Lies Beneath", Michelle Pfieffer and Harrison Ford. Watching it, you're reminded of all the successful films that Zemeckis has been involved in, and left wondering when Paramount will ever get round to releasing the "Back to the Future" trilogy on DVD?
