This film stars Donnie Yen. So? Well, for those of you who don't know him, you soon will. He's the latest Hong Kong martial arts superstar to get courted by Hollywood, and he recently signed a four-picture deal with Miramax (look out for him in "Blade 2"). A supremely gifted martial artist, he'll already have thrilled some of you on DVD in "Once Upon a Time in China 2" and "New Dragon Gate Inn".
As for "In the Line of Duty", this is a standard 80s cop thriller but what it lacks in originality it makes up for in sheer fight choreography, courtesy of the action director of "The Matrix", Yuen Woo Ping. A big UK VHS rental hit, it's now cleaned up and showcased to great effect on DVD.
In common with many Hong Kong films of that period the colours are quite pale, but the picture is clear and fresh in this otherwise excellent transfer.
The 5.1 sound mix boosts the music around the front speakers and adds a little bass, but doesn't have much to offer in terms of steering effects.
Here's a chance for you to impress your friends with your Donnie Yen knowledge, courtesy of an extensive biography and new interview with the man himself on the DVD. There's also an audio commentary with Hong Kong cinema expert Stephan Hammond, and star of the film, Michael Wong providing various anecdotes.
