Tim Burton Interview

Planet of the Apes

Interviewed by Jane Crowther

The ending of "Planet of the Apes" seems to make no sense. Can you explain it?

No, I'm not going to because one of the things I liked about the material was that it was screw you material. There is an unknown quality to it, the whole ape versus man, Darwinism versus religious beliefs - those are things that I personally can't answer and the ending puts a weird image to the weird, unanswerable questions of life. If it was literal, it wouldn't have a point. Basically, I'm not giving you an answer!

Is it true you filmed a love scene between Helena Bonham Carter and Mark Wahlberg?

No, the last time I checked, bestiality in Hollywood was a no-no and I'd like to spend as much time out of jail as I possibly can! I generally direct people to the bestiality website - go have fun there.

Did you film five different endings?

We didn't have time! I often feel like I'm in some parallel universe that I'm not aware of - like I shot all these endings but I'm not aware of it.

Is this one of your favourite movies?

My favourite movie is probably the furthest one away - Pee-Wee Herman. The more time I have away from movies the better I like them. It literally takes me five years to look at something and be slightly objective about it. So by that, the last one is probably the worst one!
