You share an hilarious scene with Ray Liotta where you are in quite a compromising position. What was it like to film?
It was my first day of shooting which was a great way to start a movie - attached to his crotch for nine hours! They took a piece of my hair and attached it with wire to his zipper so for the whole day I was on my knees facing his lower body. The whole thing was rather embarrassing but Ray and I had great fun doing it. In fact we couldn’t stop laughing, which is probably why it took so long to do. The worst thing was that my Nan came to visit me on set that day and she didn’t realise what was going on. She kept asking the crew why I was on my knees and all they could say was that I may have lost something! She obviously realised once the film came out and saw the funny side to it.
The card tricks you do look very convincing. Did you have to learn how to do them?
Yes, I did. Ricky Jay who plays the auctioneer in the movie taught me. I was supposed to do a lot more but unfortunately in the scene where Sigourney Weaver and I go into the hotel lobby and she trips me up, I actually broke my finger for real so couldn’t do anymore as my finger was in a cast!
What with playing Page, a conniving temptress in "Heartbreakers" and Satan in your forthcoming movie "The Devil and Daniel Webster", do you find yourself drawn to the dark side?
No, not normally but it did seem fitting to play Satan after playing a character like Page. Page was the seed of Satan, Satan was next. It was different to play a darker role and get away from the sweet, good-girl-next-door type which I’ve played so many times before and hopefully I manage to pull it off. I drew a lot on PMS to play Page!
Have you ever been conned?
Yes, and to top it off it happened three weeks after I’d finished shooting "Heartbreakers"! This girl approached me in the street in a real panic claiming she’d been robbed. She was hysterical so I bought her a cup of coffee to calm her down and then gave her $80 to help her out. A few minutes later I suddenly had this awful feeling that I’d just been conned. I walked around the corner and saw her jumping in a brand new car laughing with her friends.
"Heartbreakers" is released in UK cinemas on Friday 24th August 2001. Visit the official website.
