Gen-X Cops DVD (1999)

The new dawn of Hong Kong action cinema continues with the wild and wonderful "Gen-X Cops". Furious fight scenes fuse with incredible stunts in a flashy high budget thriller that's a must-own on DVD for action fans.

Picture quality is good, and doesn't present any problems. The HK$30m budget is showcased with clean cinematography that transfers well to disc.

The 5.1 Cantonese sound mix is definitely the one of choice and offers plenty of excellent surround effects, especially during the explosive rain-soaked scenes.

An often witty 'making of' documentary "No Pain, No Gain" heads-up the extra features, and comes packed with amazing behind-the-scenes stunt footage. Especially impressive are the real explosions featuring the guys that have to escape these flame-filled infernos. One of these moments involves an actor blown into a harbour. He reveals just how cold the water was, and his distinct displeasure at finding a floating turd upon surfacing in the icy cold drink.

There's also time to look at some of the injuries and visit the wrap party for which producer Jackie Chan offers some advice to aspiring action stars. Along with excellent production notes, cast and crew biographies, and promotional tit-bits, this is one cool DVD of a wicked fight flick.
