It's the end of an era as the desperately old crew of the Enterprise warp into "Star Trek VI". The Klingons are in deep trouble, and so will Paramount be if they keep releasing such lacklustre "Star Trek" DVDs.
Just as with the "Star Trek V" disc, the transfer is not anamorphic (a process which carries extra coding to create a more detailed picture on a widescreen TV). Despite this, it's not a bad effort, but the grain does start to creep into darker scenes with some loss of detail.
As for the 5.1 sound mix, it does seem to be the best yet for a Trek DVD. It's a tremendously busy affair with the opening explosion and the energy blast generating wonderful sub woofer-underpinned surround effects. There's no doubting that it provides an obvious advantage over the VHS surround mix.
Extras? Will two trailers do? Didn't think so, but that's all you get. As we've speculated before, Paramount will surely want to release special editions of all the Trek films. It's up to you whether you want to fork out for the current passable, but hardly earth-shattering releases.
