The Rainmaker DVD (1997)

Matt Damon leads the cast of American screen heavyweights in this glossy adaptation of John Grisham's novel. The film's more effective moments build mood and the DVD is good at exploiting them.

An excellent transfer seduces with colour, creating a bright, sharp picture that retains detail during darker scenes (usually involving worried lawyers burning the midnight oil in offices).

Courtroom thrillers don't often make for the best films to showcase a 5.1 set-up, so don't expect your amp to get a major workout with this film. Ambient effects create an atmospheric track that offers a few wake-up calls, such as the speaker-rolling thunder in chapter 23.

The length of the film and three 5.1 tracks (English, French, and Spanish) don't leave a lot of room for extra features. In fact, there are none. Surely a trailer for Coppola's "Jack" could have fitted on though? Then again...
