Watch a video of the London premiere of "Spy Kids".
The film has been hyped as James Bond for kids, is that how you see it?
"Austin Powers" more like! It's an action movie for kids. It's also quite similar to "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". The main thing about "Spy Kids" is that it's not based on a character we all know like James Bond who's been around for 40 years, it's a totally original idea.
It must be nice to star in a movie that your own children are able to see as well?
Yes, It's one of the reasons why I did it. Little Estella is four-and-a-half now and she's going to grow up fast. I wanted to do a movie that she'd be able to see her pappy appearing in. That's what my life is about, doing movies and spending time with my family.
Having children yourself, did it make it easier to work with them or did it not make any difference from working with adults?
No, it was very easy. Alexa and Daryl, the Spy Kids, were great. I was on another shoot in Mexico when Robert (Rodriguez) rang me and asked me to play his character. It sounded like a lot of fun so I accepted and filming only took nine or ten days. Carla Gugino, my on-screen wife, and I played around like kids on the set, especially with all the gadgets, we had a ball.
With the actors strike on in the US this summer, what will you do?
We will strike! I will take a break and spend time with my family. I may also be working on a film that isn't financed by the US. It's a Wayne Wang film called "Johnny Stompanato" and it'll be shot in Canada.
