There's little doubting the superior production values of "Amistad", and they're worth experiencing on DVD.
The muted colour schemes and low lighting used in the film are more accurate to the period, but pose obvious problems for a transfer to disc. The DVD handles the shadowy tones well, and doesn't break down into grainy visuals, even in the particularly dark prison scenes.
The 5.1 track kicks off the movie with a fearsome storm that will have you battening down your sub woofer. It's a superb speaker-rolling thunder-fest that is then followed by two hours of largely ambient effects.
The extra features may seem a little on the mean side, but the 25-minute behind-the-scenes featurette should answer most questions, with interviews with many of the cast and crew.
