You Can Count On me

Interviewed by James Mottram

How did you get involved with "You Can Count On Me"?

Over the years, the director Kenny Lonergan and I traded dozens of phone calls about potential readings, so we knew each other and were familiar with each other's work. I always respected his talent. I was very happy when this film went into production so we could finally work together. It has been a wonderful experience.

What did you like about his script?

It has great characters, it's a sweet story, and it has a big heart. There are acting challenges galore because of the subtleties of the relationships involved. It's an absolute delight for an actor.

What do you think of your character, Sammy?

Sammy's identity is tied up in her brother Terry. It falls apart without him. With him moving on, it's the first time she can make it without him and I think the same is true for him.

Did working on "The Truman Show" bring you a greater selection of scripts?

No. "The Truman Show" came out and it was extremely well received, but no, it didn't happen. It was disappointing because the hype was so big. You learn a very good lesson: do not expect anything. I've always been very good at that. I've never expected much. "The Truman Show", because it was so big and was so successful, there were great expectations for what I would do next. It just didn't happen.
