Hard Boiled DVD (1992)

"Hard Boiled" is a film that many people will have been looking forward to seeing on DVD, and Metro Tartan have made an effort to source all sorts of goodies for this release.

The (uncut) film itself looks great in an anamorphic transfer that copes very well with the heavy blue saturation in some of the scenes.

A complaint of the video release was always the thin soundtrack. It's a far stronger affair on DVD, although there is not much in that way of stereo steering effects to enjoy. The music is more powerful and there's less distortion than on the old VHS version.

The main extra feature on this disc is a 30-minute documentary from 1994 about Woo, where he's interviewed and clips of his movies are shown. He takes us right through his childhood obsession with films to his 'new' US feature "Hard Target" with Jean-Claude Van Damme. It's an informative affair, unlike the so-called interview with Chow Yun Fat, which is more of an entertaining written account of his first visit to the UK.

Also worth a look is the 'Cut/Uncut' scene comparison where a cut version of a fight sequence is played opposite the newly passed cut. It's a very simple idea but a clever one at that and hopefully other distributors will pick up on it.
