Superstar DVD (2000)

The US TV show "Saturday Night Live" gives birth to another movie spin-off, again hampered by the tough test of stretching a one-joke sketch into a feature length film. Still, if you can't bear to have a gap in your high-school-comedy collection then you'll find little to grumble about with this DVD.

The picture transfer is good and copes well with the Day-Glo colour scheme that seems to pervade the school. It does little though to mask the fact that the principal 'school kid' actors look well into their 30s.

The moments of humour are relatively few and far between. But while you wait for the next feeble laugh, there is at least a cheesy toe-tapping music score to stave off boredom. The 5.1 sound mix primarily keeps busy delivering the pop tunes, but also surrounds you with the ambient giggles of a school gone mad.

As for extras, Paramount has only slung on a trailer. There's not much you'd likely want to know about the making of the film, but adding footage from "Saturday Night Live" might have been a good move. This would at least create better awareness and understanding of the bizarre characters that pop up in movies based on US TV shows that never get screened over here.
