How did you get started in the business?
I made a bunch of short films, including a 25 minute narrative, "Saturn", which won an award at a festival in Japan. One of the judges was producer Christine Vachon. When I wrote a feature-length version of the film - a dark inner-city drama about a kid killing his father - she helped to produce it. A year later, this script came up, I showed it to her and she wanted to produce it.
Your new film ("Crime + Punishment in Suburbia") feels very stylised. What were you trying to achieve with that?
This particular movie is from Vincent's point of view. He's the sort of outsider artist kid. The idea behind all the style was to let the audience feel they're watching it from Vincent's point of view.
What's your next movie going to be?
A film called "American Heroes". It's set in 1969, three days before the moonwalk. Milla Jovovich will play a sort of hippy terrorist girl who comes across a reel of film showing Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, three days before it happens. The film's about her trying to get it to the press before the moonwalk is broadcast. It'll be a fun action thriller.
Rob Schmidt on his new film.
