Be warned. The mighty comet that promises an 'Extinction Level Event' for the characters of "Deep Impact", also threatens your sub woofer with the same fate, courtesy of the DVD release.
You're not as likely to be wiped out by the number of extras on the disc, though . Two trailers are all you get. Still, it's better than a comet in the face.
Once you've decided what order you're going to watch the trailers in, there's the not inconsiderable matter of the movie itself. Boasting impressive CGI effects (don't they all these days?), the disc serves them up with stunning quality. Every frame is clear and deep with detail, whether it's a walk in the park or New York's twin towers succumbing to a sturdy wave.
Now this is a big wave and it forms the centrepiece of the sound design to the movie. Rather than the usual trick of throwing aching levels of noise at you, it starts with the sub woofer doing the chores. An ominous rumble builds slowly and then tears into the rest of your speakers. They eventually yield to the type of chaos that'll have your neighbours suspecting you've received a cataclysmic visit from the Devil.
Indeed, "Deep Impact" is a fine title for such a noisy DVD that captures every moment of disaster beautifully.
