Despite the late arrival of this Cold War thriller, it was a major video hit in the UK in 1989. Dolph Lundgren is a Soviet Spetznaz agent who takes on his evil superiors in a desert-set film that looks reasonable on DVD.
Director Joseph Zito effectively created a right old reunion of 'talent' from his previously far more successful (and vaguely better) "Missing in Action", with Chuck Norris. Along with M Emmet Walsh, he also bagged cinematographer Joao Fernandes, who always makes cheap films look better than they really are. Unfortunately, Zito's talent for sluggish direction dominates proceedings.
Fernandes manages to produce some nice shots of the Swaziland countryside with the red desert glowing with colour on the DVD. Darker scenes are a problem though, with the villains of the piece quite grainy in their oh-so-sinister bunker.
The 2.0 sound mix is very firmly rooted in the centre speaker and although adequate does not add any excitement.
The main extra on the disc is the US trailer, which, unfortunately, is not as good as the far snappier UK original (no one should know these things). Also included is a short Dolph Lundgren biography and film facts feature although you're unlikely to learn anything new from them.
