Paul Hogan

Crocodile Dundee 3

Interviewed by Film 2000 with Jonathan Ross

Why have you decided to do "Crocodile Dundee 3"?

I wasn't interested for the first five, six, seven years. I thought no, I've done that story, I've done a circle, and then eventually you find yourself in a place and think, I'd like to see Mick Dundee here, he would have the time of his life, and Los Angeles is that place because it is so opposite of what he is.

How does Mick make the film funny?

He just encounters everyday sort of life in Los Angeles and starts to see the absurdity of it.

How has Mick Dundee changed?

Got older, hasn't changed otherwise. He's always had his own Outback values and has refused to move with the times. He still won't watch television, have a cell phone, or be on the Web and it makes him sort of out of place, particularly in LA, which is so hip and happening and swift. He isn't and refuses to be. The world has got more sophisticated.

Are you afraid of being typecast?

I've been totally typecast since the first one came out. I was 45 years old and I'd never been seen as anything else by the world. I've been in semi-retirement for about ten years so I don't have a problem with it.

Tell me about the rest of the cast.

My co-star is Linda Kozlowski, who is also my wife, and we've got a nine-year-old son who pops in here and there for a few surprises. My other co-star is Los Angeles.

What's it like working with your wife?

They back-chat you a little more than a normal actress would. It's very comfortable.

What is it about Crocodile Dundee that's connected with audiences around the world?

He's such a common, down to earth kind of guy I think. He's very easy to relate to.

What's in store for people who go to see "Crocodile Dundee 3"?

A lot of laughs. I think this one is funnier than the other two.

Was there one person who inspired the character?

The germ was born on my first trip to New York. I felt like an alien from another planet, some of the 'Bushie' guys I know would feel even more out of place. There's a myth that there is a real Crocodile Dundee but there isn't.
