"Mystery Men" is an overlong and slightly tiresome take on the amusing concept of blue-collar superheroes for which success is but a dream. There's certainly plenty of evidence why the film doesn't work in the extra features on the DVD.
The extras include 19 minutes of deleted scenes, some of which are actually quite good. The commentary by director Kinka Usher alludes to more scenes that were dropped, suggesting that the film could potentially have been longer than "Titanic". At 116 minutes, it can drag at times and Kinka Usher's favourite scenes, like the confusing party battle at the beginning, are often just noisy and hard to comprehend.
Where the film scores points is in the numerous colourful set designs. These certainly look striking in this excellent transfer to DVD.
Sound wise there's plenty to keep your amplifier busy. A particular highlight is the swirling 'psycho-frakulator' in chapter 16 that is as close as you'll get to a hurricane in your living room.
