Bring It On (2000)

The spate of teen comedies coming out of Hollywood recently doesn't seem to have abated and here is the latest - a flick set amongst the cream of America's young women: cheerleaders.

Torrance Shipman (Dunst) has just inherited the captaincy of the high school cheerleading squad - a team with a lot to live up to since it's the reigning title holder of the American Cheerleading Championships (yes, there is such a thing as competitive cheerleading). However, when Torrance discovers the previous skipper nicked all the routines of a team too poor to attend, she is determined that her team win on their own merits.

Amid the bickering of the other girls (as well as, surprisingly but apparently accurately, boys) Torrance's main helper is feisty new girl Missy (Dushku), whose hip brother Cliff (Bradford) Torrance also has a little crush on.

This is lightweight stuff, but the movie zooms along, cleverly managing to take its subject matter seriously, but at the same time poke fun at it. One particularly pleasant difference is that rather than being dismissed as a bunch of blonde airheads, the team members are acknowledged as skilled athletes and gymnasts, which, if their routines are anything to go by, is absolutely right.

If it's all a tad predictable - climaxing in the inevitable showdown between Torrance's team and Gabrielle Union's inner-city squad - then enjoy the spiky interplay between the characters and the knowing performances. Dunst, for one, is destined for greater things, while the delicious Dushku adds a brash, sexy feel to proceedings.

Give us a B! Give us an R!... Well, you get the idea.
