Maniac Cop DVD (1988)

"Maniac Cop" always suffered from a rather hazy and bleached picture on VHS and it has not particularly improved on DVD.

This is not so much the fault of the UK distributor but of production company Shapiro-Glickenhaus Entertainment, who have released some of the fuzziest looking films around.

There is an overall grainy veneer to the picture on DVD, although scenes like the morgue in chapter three and the bar in seven are quite clear. Otherwise it's a little murky but that's entirely appropriate to the film.

The sound is an entirely different matter with the Ultra Stereo track clear as a bell. The music tends to be its best feature but there's the odd effect like the street noise in chapter ten.

Extras are limited to the trailer which moves only marginally faster than the film. It's a mid-range priced disc and hardly likely to attract massive sales. But Synergy have kindly added trailers for some of their other Shapiro-Glickenhaus releases that include "The Exterminator", "Red Scorpion", "Frankenhooker" and the "Basket Case" movies.

NB. This disc is Region 0 - it can be played on any DVD machine in any region.
