James Garner

Space Cowboys

Interviewed by James Mottram

How did you convince Clint to cast you?

I almost had to beg him! But if Clint Eastwood calls you to do a picture you jump at it. There is no hesitation.

What equipment did you have to learn to use?

In my case it was the 'capturing arm'. I practised with that and I got quite good at it, but the rest of it I left to the other two guys. But it was fun learning how to use that, and that is all the training I had to do.

Do you remember Neil Armstrong's landing?

Yes, I was engulfed by it. I watched it on television with my wife.

What are your views on getting older?

You cannot fight age. You are just the age you are in the mind, and if you think young you stay very young.

What has been the main goal in your career?

I am busy working and always have been and that is my goal as I have been going along. Stardom was not something I looked for, I only looked for work because I enjoy it, and it is one of the three loves of my life. My children and my wife are my other two passions - and golf.

How would you like to leave this earth?

When I go I want to finish the last shot of a picture and go directly off the set, like Spencer Tracy.
