Hook DVD (1991)

Steven Spielberg's updating of the story of Peter Pan is a messy and incoherent effort but there are nevertheless many enjoyable moments in this noisy and vigorous affair. There's certainly no criticising the splendid sets and costume designs, which look fabulous on DVD.

Clearly a lot of effort has gone into producing this disc which boasts some of the best animated menus around that are great fun to use. Amongst the added features is an intriguing interactive game "The Lost Treasure" where you have to navigate around an island to retrieve hidden artefacts. It plays a little slowly for anyone used to console games but the graphics are good and it's the type of DVD 'extra' that you don't normally get to see.

As far as the film goes it certainly sparkles in a near-pristine transfer to DVD with the dark opening scene in the school play rich in detail. All the various fantasy locations including the island in chapter ten are vibrantly colourful.

Accompanying all the action is a busy 5.1 sound track that kicks off in chapter four with the orchestration building to great effect to indicate the approaching menace of Hook. And watch out for a set of bedclothes disappearing into your rear speakers.

And if you aren't too tired then have a browse through the photo galleries. Choose the 'alternative advertising campaigns' and you get a fascinating array of all the different poster designs considered for "Hook".
