The Frozen Planet team travelled across the Southern Ocean by small yacht for five days to reach the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. Film crews stayed for over a month on the beach at St. Andrew's Bay amongst thousands of elephant seals and king penguins. Their aim was to film the enormous male elephant seals fighting for breeding females and the massive penguin colony found there.

The beach at St Andrew's Bay, on the northern coast of South Georgia, has more mass of animals per square metre than any other beach on Earth. Located 1400km southeast of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia is one of the most remote islands in the world. Marine birds and mammals come here to breed on the narrow 5km beach wedged between the icy Southern Ocean and 3,000m peaks rising directly behind the beach.
