The Mission

Exploring the islands of the South Pacific, two programme teams were filming the extraordinary wildlife found on the tiny specks of land found in the largest ocean on Earth. One team travelled to the remote island of Metoma in the hope of finding and filming the largest land crabs in the world. The other went to Codfish Island, one of New Zealand’s most special wildlife sites, and home to the charismatic Kakapo.

Where on Earth?

Metoma is one of the tiny Torres islands that form part of the island nation of Vanuatu. Vanuatu is north-east of Brisbane, Australia. The country consists of over 80 volcanic islands spread over 12,190km². Codfish Island (also known as Whenua Hou) lies at the southern end of the New Zealand archipelago. The island is usually closed to visitors as it’s a special reserve.
