Eaten alive

Steve Backshall is unnerved by a strange visitor dropping in.

The strange creature that Steve discovered was in fact a caterpillar being parasitized by maggots. It looked as if a fly had laid its eggs within the caterpillar and the maggots were emerging in their dozens.

George McGavin photographed some of the strange animals found during the expedition. See pictures of these weird crater creatures.

When programme maker James Brickell entered Borneo's Gomantong caves he thought he had discovered hell on Earth. The caves are home to millions of cockroaches and other invetebrates crawling around the cave floor. Find out how he survived dropping into the Gomantong caves.
