Grass-eating polar bears

Polar bears are not usually thought of as grazers.

The polar bears of Hudson Bay are confined to this narrow coastal strip for much of the summer. The way they socialise and indulge in a more vegetarian diet may be the future for other polar bears as the extent of summer sea ice declines across the Arctic.

Most bear species have a fearsome reputation, but as programme maker Ted Oakes discovered it is sometimes possible to get to know them more intimately. Find out how Ted was charmed by black bears.
