Being watched by a wolf

by Chadden Hunter for Barrenlands, 22 June 2008

When summer arrives in the Arctic, the place comes alive with breeding birds. For predators such as Arctic wolves, these few weeks represent an all-you-can-eat bonanza. As the wolves trot through the colony there's no need to tackle aggressive adult geese. Instead they gorge on unattended eggs or goslings, sometimes feeding on 50 nests in a row.

Living in such a remote place, these scruffy white Arctic wolves have possibly never seen humans. When one spots Chadden, she makes a beeline from over 2km just to check him out.

Being watched by a wolf

Chadden Hunter gets up close to an Arctic wolf.

Natural history fim makers can spend hours trying to capture an animal on film. But sometimes the animal finds them first. Ellen Husain was suprised by an underwater predator when she went turtle watching with a twist in Hawaii.
