Azerbaijan sings up
Yes, we're really rushing at full speed towards the finish line of 2009's 'announcements season', because yet another country has revealed the song they will be sending to Moscow for this year's Eurovision Song Contest.
Azerbaijan had already teased the rest of Europe by previously announcing both the name of the song and the identity of the act who'll be representing them. However, up until yesterday, we'd not actually had a chance to hear the tune. So here it is: young female vocalist AySel and male singer Arash performing "Always".
This is only the second time that Azerbaijan has taken part in Eurovision, following their debut in the contest in 2008. They did rather well for a first-time entry, grabbing a very respectable 8th position.
And for those of you whose geography is a little bit rusty, Azerbaijan can be found in the 'Caucasus' region, located at the junction between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Azerbaijan's immediate neighbours include Russia to the North, Georgia to the North-West, Armenia to the West (with Turkey just beyond Armenia) and Iran immediately to the South, with the vast Caspian Sea to the East.
So has Azerbaijan done enough to win the contest this year? Will they manage to progress past the semi-final (they're competing in the second semi-final on Thurs 14h May, by the way)? Will everyone be heading off to their capital city of Baku in 2010? We'll just have to wait and see...
