The Chase Way, as this track is known, runs alongside the Iron Age Lexden Dyke (to your left), an imposing ancient earth bank constructed by hand around 2,000 years ago for defensive reasons and as a statement of power. These dykes were built in the 1st century BC and enclosed an area of about 30 square kilometres.

In sumemr the vegetation on the dry slope includes the Harebell, a rare plant locally. Sheep Sorrel also grows along the top of the bank on the thin acid soil. Look out for two large pollarded Oaks, which are several hundred years old. The rotton wood inside the trunks provides a thriving home for insects and beetles.
