Eric Hall and Cliff Richard

When Eric met Cliff

This year Sir Cliff Richard is celebrating 50 years in the music business. BBC Essex presenter, Eric Hall, worked with Cliff back in the 70s when he was a record promoter. They met recently whilst Cliff was rehearsing for his Time Machine Tour.

During the time that Eric was Head Of Promotion at EMI Records, he was responsible for the "plugging" of Cliff's 1976 album "I'm Nearly Famous".

Th album contained the hit single 'Miss You Nights' and gave Cliff his first US Top 10 single with 'Devil Woman'.

Thirty years later, the two met up again as Cliff prepared for his latest tour and began with Eric showing a picture of Cliff presenting a Gold Disc to Eric for the album, 'I'm Nearly Famous'.

"Oh my goodness, look at you and me," exclaimed Cliff. "When people say we don't change they don't look at these old pictures!

"It was so much fun in those days.  What's happened is our industry has diverted into so many different directions.  I don't know if the right people are at the top, I don't mean in the artistic side but the managerial side.

"It seems to be that the fun has left it"

The pair talked about how the music industry has changed and how the amount of records being sold has reduced.

They also discussed what Cliff's favourite Christmas single is and there's a great insight into the nicknames that Elton John gave Cliff and Eric when they worked together!
