Springwatch on your doorstep

Springwatch is back on the TV at the end of May 2008 and this year, there's a chance to get involved in a project in Essex. BBC Essex will be at Brownings Avenue in Chelmsford on Saturday, 7, June. It's one of around 50 events right across the UK.

The Springwatch Action Team will be at Brownings Avenue on Saturday, 7, June from 11am to 3pm creating a garden area for people and wildlife.

There are two ways you can join in.

Come along and enjoy the free, family activities on offer including a colouring competition and seed planting.

Sign up to volunteer and spend a morning or afternoon working alongside the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.

You'll be creating raised beds, digging, putting in sleepers and planting.

If you'd like to join the Springwatch team of volunteers on Saturday, 7, June you can e-mail chris.penhall@bbc.co.uk or call the BBC Essex Helpline on 01245 348348.

The land we are working on is fairly close to the Melbourne Stadium; Brownings Avenue runs along one side and a development by Countryside Properties overlooks the area.

It's owned by Chelmsford Borough Council who are backing the project.

Inspired to create a garden for wildlife

Chelmer Housing Partnership work extensively in the area and neighbourhood engagement coordinator, Malin Blom, told the BBC: "I'm really looking forward to this project and I hope lots of local people will get involved."

It's part of BBC Breathing Places which aims to create areas which are good for people and good for wildlife.

Local schoolchildren have already been inspired to create a wildlife garden; youngsters at Melbourne Park Primary and Nursery School will feature on BBC Essex as part of the project.
