Are you up for the challenge?

For Sport Relief 2008 we're asking you to challenge yourself, your family, your friends or your colleagues to do something sporty and raise cash at the same time.

Last Sport Relief saw David Walliams swim the English Channel in just 10½ hours, while 12 brave stars learnt to show-jump for 'Only Fools on Horses'.  Take a lead from their example and challenge yourself, your family, friends and colleagues to do something sporty and raise cash at the same time.

Dame Kelly Holmes

The ultimate challenge is doing the Sport Relief Mile where hundreds of thousands of people across the country will take to the streets and go the distance.

The whole of the BBC will be behind Sport Relief 2008 too - delivering brilliant entertainment across TV, radio and online.

With so much planned, Sport Relief 2008 is all set to be a real winner.

Are you up for the challenge?

We're looking for people across the UK to take part in and organise Sport Relief Mile events that are fun and enable you to raise loads of cash for Comic Relief at the same time.

Interested? Then why not sign up.

There are 23 flagship miles dotted across the UK and hundreds more local miles - so there will be a Sport Relief Mile close to you, use the postcode search on

to pinpoint your closest one.

If you're interested in organising a Sport Relief Mile you'll need:

  • To hold your event on Sunday 16 March 2008.
  • To make your event open to the public and accessible to all.
  • To be over 18 years old (if you are the organiser).
  • To have good organisational skills and buckets of enthusiasm.
  • Access to a free venue and a mile course - for example a sports ground, local park, university campus or a space big enough for lots of people.
  • A group of reliable and fired up volunteers to help you.

What's happening in Essex?

There are six sport relief miles taking place this year in Essex.  The locations they are being held in are Braintree, Chelmsford, Colchester, Dagenham, Maldon and Thurrock.

More information on the local events taking place will follow soon.

Where did the money go last time?

The money raised through Sport Relief has helped older people living in rural areas in the Dengie Peninsula have access to gentle exercise classes.  This helps them to keep fit and also socialise and meet new people through getting out the house.
