It is all about Marconi, and Chelmsford is the birthplace of Wireless. We've been on the trail of the ghost of Marconi in Chelmsford. The ghost of Marconi is still visible in Chelmsford. There are four main areas where you can still see evidence of Marconi in Chelmsford. ![]() The transmissions using a piano Writtle, New Street, Hall Street and Great Baddow are all key sites. Marconi played a big part in the development of Chelmsford as the factories brought families and employment to the area. The InterAlia exhibition is a modern art exhibition which has incorporated the work of several Essex artists exploring the subject of communication. As part of the exhibition the BBC has made a film which goes on the trail of the remains of Marconi in Chelmsford. ![]() Melba Court in Writtle WrittleMelba Court in Writtle is actually clouded in history as far as broadcasting is concerned. Dame Nellie Melba is famous for having sung in a pioneering radio broadcast, in a wooden hut in Writtle. New StreetThe New Street site was Marconi's main factory, and it was the first purpose built wireless factory in the world. Hall StreetThe Hall Street factory started in 1899. It was the first wireless factory where Marconi manufactured the early equipment. ![]() The plaque at Hall Street Marconi Research EstablishmentThe Marconi Research Establishment was where the early work and experiments on Marconi products took place before being designated back to various factories.
