Mike and Ollie the unsigned pioneers
Meet Mike and Ollie
Mike and Ollie are presenting a new radio show on BBC Essex for unsigned bands in Essex. Find out why they are so passionate about the local music scene and how you can get involved.
To be involved with the local music scene is such an amazing experience, but to be involved with the music scene as a job with BBC Essex and bring all of the talent in the county along with us is priceless.
Our job came about in the most peculiar way, because Ollie had been granted about £2000 Southend Fix-it funding to start up a small record label on the Southend music scene, BBC Essex had shown interest in his story, and subsequently was invited to an interview on the breakfast show with Etholle George and John Hayes.
Ollie then brought up with Mike that he had an interview, and it might be worthwhile if he came along as Mike was (and is) heavily involved with the Southend Music Circuit, and assisting Hi-Fly Music.
The interview took place and we turned up to the studios in Chelmsford bright and early on a Friday Morning, by pure coincidence the Managing Editor, Gerald Main, was listening to the show on his way into work and liked the way we sounded, and was impressed that we where clued up on Essex’s musical history.
Ollie gets down to the job
He phoned into the show just as we where about to leave the studio, a pair of headphones where put our way and the next thing we knew we were offered jobs as presenters for an unsigned music show coming in autumn ’07, and we left the studio as colleagues!
Over summer we have been spending time coming into the studios on a weekly basis, sitting in on shows, getting tips from the best presenters around, training on the various equipment and presenting techniques needed to make you guys listen each week!
Various photos have been taken, and press articles released in the build up to the show, and so we have been told, we are the youngest radio presenters in the country. The show is launching on September, 7, and the pressure is rising.
We have loved reading the masses of emails, and listening to the CD’s we have had in the post (it’s always nice to see some post in our pigeon hole!).
We have managed to keep the online team on there toes by forwarding them bands that have been getting in touch with us, to do follow up articles on the sites swinging or minging section.
So, it comes down to this we think; tune into our show on September,7, and every Friday thereafter at 7pm–8pm to hear the best pick of Essex’s new & unsigned music, who knows, we may even see the odd well known face come through the show as well!
