Sarah Griffiths, aged 23, from Brentwood, and Mary Pasquale, aged 20, from Thurrock are two scouts who joined others from all over Europe to take part in Roverway06. The adventure took Sarah and Mary to Italy and Sicily. During their time away they were split into different teams and had to carry all their own kit. They hiked on one of 100 different routes. During the trip they were joined by nearly 5,000 other Scouts and Guides, aged 16-22, from over 40 different countries in Europe and beyond.

Under the Roverway theme of "Dare to Share" they have all been involved in a variety of community and environmental projects. Throughout these expeditions they were asked to "dare" by being engaged to be responsible citizens and help contribute towards a better world. Eventually they all came together in the hilltop village of Loppiano, some 50kms south of Florence, the host venue for Roverway.

This is where they shared and re-lived their experiences. There were numerous activities and over 100 workshops designed to provide them with extra challenges. Sarah and Mary were just two of the participants who joined up with a 40 strong team comprising Scouts and Guides from Italy and Portugal. Their route involved hiking in the Venice and Trieste areas. Mary said "This has been a fantastic adventure for me. The whole concept of Roverway has been an incredible idea, and the routes have been chosen so that we can get that much closer to our hosts". Sarah added "It was amazing how well we were looked after from the moment we put on our Scout uniforms. We now have new friends, new stories and a new outlook on life". |
