Grays and Woking line up before the match.
Grays Athletic line up before the match.

Grays Athletic retain Trophy.

Grays Athletic became only the fourth side to retain the FA Trophy when they defeated Woking 2-0 at Upton Park.

Goals from Dennis Oli and Glenn Poole completed a comfortable win for the Blues against fellow Conference side Woking, delighting the 7000 strong Grays Athletic fans who'd made the short journey to the home of West Ham United.

Grays dominated the match and were always in control, although goalkeeper Ashley Bayes was called upon to produce a couple of fine saves in the second half.

Athletic went into the match as holders of the Trophy, having defeated Hucknall last season.  The success capped off a great season that has seen them compete in the Conference for the first time in their history, and only just missed gaining promotion to the Football League after just missing out in the Play-Offs.

Manager Mark Stimson was delighted with his players after the match. "We had a game plan to get the ball down on the fantastic surface, move the ball around, move some of their older players around and test them."

"To go and retain this great Trophy is fantastic, because if you ask anybody who's won something, the next year is always very difficult because everyone wants to beat you."

"We've done it the hard way, and to take the trophy back to Grays tonight is fantastic."

Well what can be said, in fact the players said it all on the Pitch. Is there going to be a Victory Parade for a team that deserves it? (EDITOR: They normally hold one during the Thurrock Carnival)
