Weekend PresentersYou are in: Essex > Local Radio > BBC Essex Presenters > Weekend Presenters > Steve Cherelle ![]() Steve knows a good tune when he hears it Steve CherelleIf you like your country music from Essex, the UK or around the world, then join Steve every Sunday from 1, for two hours of new and classic songs, live performances and interviews. Steve left college to become a bluecoat at 18-years-old, which he did for three years around the UK. From this he went to Rhodes to work as a DJ compere and at the time this is where he thought he'd stay - until he realised he could sing. So, after a season in Spain working as a cabaret singer Steve changed direction and focused solely on singing. Steve loves presenting his show on BBC Essex - "it's a lot of fun to do." He loves receiving mail and the occasions when he gets to meet the listeners are a real treat.
Join Steve between 1 and 3. Steve's BIG questions:What was your first radio memory? The radio in our house was always on at weekends. This was the time people always came to visit. I can clearly remember watching my Dad make up cassettes of songs he liked from Sunday radio shows. The music always seemed to be easy listening in those days. How did you first get into radio? As an act on the UK country music scene, I would guest on Country shows in Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, etc. I was a guest on Essex three times and loved the radio environment, along with the music. At the end of each visit I would say "If you ever leave, I would like to do this show..." Eventually this paid off when Nigel Rennie, the then presenter of Essex Country, emigrated to Cyprus and put me forward to take the show over. I was interviewed and got the job. The first show was both the most exciting and nerve-wracking day of my life. Years on and I still get a little nervous just before going live, but I think that keeps me sharp. What is your favourite song ever?'Leaving on a jet plane' is my all-time favourite song. This is the song that inspired me to start playing an old acoustic guitar we had in the house....
What one thing makes Essex so special?Essex is home to me.....born, raised and living here. I love how close we are to the capital. last updated: 19/06/2009 at 15:01 SEE ALSOYou are in: Essex > Local Radio > BBC Essex Presenters > Weekend Presenters > Steve Cherelle |
