John eases you into the weekday evenings

John Hayes

Has your day and the journey home left you stressed? Then listen to John each weekday between 4 and 7pm and let him ease you into the evening.

John's professional career began on an industrial radio station. UBN (United Biscuits Network) was based in Isleworth, Middlesex which produced radio by a land line to factories all over the UK.  Then he worked at a variety of commercial stations until he joined the Beeb in 1992.

John has been broadcasting in Essex for over 25 years. Since he joined BBC Essex he was the Southend Producer/Morning Show presenter, and co-presented the Breakfast Show for eight years.

Now he has set the alarm clock to a more reasonable time and will be helping you to ease in to the evening with a chilled look back at the days events and some great music.

More about John...

  • John grew up in Taunton, Somerset and his starsign in Libra.

  • His first job was as an apprentice heating engineer and his first kiss was with Alison Nimmo, "aged five, blonde with blue eyes and gorgeous!"

  • The first car he bought was a Reliant Robin, which you could drive with a motorbike licence.

  • The first record that John bought was 'Diana' by Paul Anka in 1957.

  • John's favourite place in Essex is the County Ground in Chelmsford. "I love cricket. A wonderful place to relax and unwind."

  • If John wasn't working in radio he would be "doing it for nothing on a hospital radio station. I just love broadcasting."

  • John has two moments at BBC Essex that he is most proud of.  The first was presenting the morning programme the day that Margaret Thatcher unexpectedly resigned, "suddenly every politician in Essex wanted to get on air with a comment."  The second was presenting the morning that Princess Diana died, "we made the whole programme up as we went along."
