View of the beach

Brightlingsea is well known for it's colourful beach huts and from across the water you can see Mersea Island.

Brightlingsea has a small beach in a semicircular shape where the River Colne flows into the sea.

It is a noncommercial resort and in many ways is similar to Mersea Island beach.

Brightlingsea beach is suitable for you if you don't want to go to a packed beach resort, and just want a quiet day out.

There isn't any entertainment on the beach, as it is a very small area, so you could go and enjoy a swim and sunbathe, whilst watching the boats out on the water.

However, if you are feeling energetic there is a sports centre in the town.

The Town Hard is the place to go if you want to watch all the waterfront comings and goings.

You can also see the activities of the Smack Preservation Society, and watch the boats.

Lived here for 52 tranquil years. Visitors enjoy sea air, sailing, both real and model boats and an unusually dry climate. No slot machines. But don't tell anyone! Only blot on the landscape is the over developed Waterside horror that looks like prison blocks - local nickname Colditz! Built on pug behind steel shuttering, hopefully it will sink out of site in the coming years.

I wish to come back to visit for a week or 10 days but want to rent a cottage / mobile home/ or beach hut to live inn while there on the beach or sea any ideas where?

i live in b'sea and i love it! go to brightlinsea and explore all of the new features to the town. its a great place for sailors and people who love beaches. Its also near Colchester, a good big town with loads of shops, a castle, a zoo and loads of things to do! and the weather isnt too bad! nice walks, good things for children and and good facilities!

It's not such a bad place to live, but the cafe on the end of the prom does need up dating URGENTLY! The Promenade isn't so bad but to charge people to park there has been a disaster, with cars parking all along the road with no passing places. I also suggest travelling just up the road to Wivenhoe for places to eat in the evening. SORT IT OUT!! Brightlingsea could be so much nicer, with more investment and a better effort from shops in the town. No need to turn it into a mini Clacton, but a little more thought.

Walter
Lovely place, shame about the over development of the Waterside. Not to mention the Dog Pooh!!!!

rita pryke
a very nice and clean place to visit a nice cafe and a place for children to play

Brightlingsea IS good for sea fishing. It is now much better than it was in the 1980s & 90s. From the Sailing club to right along the old railway line to the Alresford creek. Depends on the time of year, but you can catch Dabs, Plaice, Flounders, Whiting & Bass. You just need to be able to cast long distance & use the correct tackle & bait!! Codling & Mackerel have been caught in the Colne this year aswell...so who knows??

sophie

My aunt and uncle (mary and Ian Cook) live in Brightlingsea - I visited them in 2000 (I live in sunny South Africa). I found Brightlingsea beach quaint and entertaining, very pretty and the atmosphere at the pubs and fish shops is great. Enjoyed it alot.

me and my friend didnt realise that the beech was actually knee deep mud and we just waded through mud for ages and then when we got the sea it was even worse.much fun though.even though we stank and may of messed up the public loos abit, good times.

Mother
Brightlingsea beach is great for children and there is a lovely footpath for walks along the old railway line by the waterside. There is also a super little cafe called the Tower Cafe by the tower.

Stan Procter
I was there on 18th July 2007 for the first time since my last visit in 1937 when the beach huts were much more attractive than those there now. The hut which we used was owned by my uncle who lived in Colchester (we came from Surrey) and was a few yards down the promenade shown in your picture.I loved Brightlingsea in the 1930s but overdevelopment around The Hard is ruining it

rosie

bethany daley
the council should provide more room for the fair as the same rides are there every year and many people of the community are bored with the same rides...!!They need to be adventurous !!

Linda Hazell
The beach is very clean, also there are toilets and seaside cafes closer to the sea front than this report says. In fact the nearest is a short walk from the paddlingpool carpark.
