Power FM 104.1 is an urban youth radio station broadcasting from the
heart of Kampala, Uganda. It's programmes are lively and upbeat and
include the latest music, news and entertainment.
Power FM is a station that broadcasts positive programmes about life
and lifestyle choices. While some shows are music based, others address
issues like health, education, careers, money and relationships.
Power
FM doesn't just base itself in the studio. Each week it takes programmes
out to University Campus's and schools and gives a voice to young
people in the city as it debates important issues.
The station recently received funding from the Global Fund to help
reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS in Uganda.
HIV/AIDS
Every family in Uganda has been affected in some way by the HIV/AIDS
virus. Everyone you meet can tell you a story about someone they
know, who has died from the disease.
The
first case of HIV/AIDS was diagnosed in Uganda in 1982. Uganda was
among the first hard hit countries. In the early 1990's, around
30% of the population were HIV positive.
Officially the statistic's have now fallen to around 6%, largely
due to health education campaigns and funding from abroad. Approximately
75,000 new cases of HIV are recorded in Uganda each year.
Claire
Welford talks to a Ugandan woman about her experiences of living
with HIV/AIDS and how the help group she belongs to has empowered
her. Listen
