Chelmsford
The present history of Chelmsford began in about 1100 when Bishop Maurice bridged the River Can, restoring a Roman Route which grew up around Moulsham Street during the Roman occupation of Britain. In 1199 King John granted permission for a market between the River Can and the River Chelmer on the site of the present High Street.
