Mastermind 2006 winner

In the final, transmitted on 13th November, Geoff Thomas became the 29th winner of the title in a line stretching back to Nancy Wilkinson in 1972.

Retired university lecturer Geoff from the north west won by answering questions on Margaret Mitchell and Gone With the Wind, having in previous rounds scored heavily on Edith Piaf and on William Joyce.

He beat five finalists to the prize having romped home with an amazing 36 points.

As Magnus Magnusson presented him with the famous crystal bowl he admitted the result had helped secure one of his two life ambitions. The other? To live to 100.
